“Why him? He is so -(fill in the blank)."

I heard this question with varying descriptors from many friends when I first announced I was marrying my husband.

My response each time was “He loves me and treats me like a princess; and you don’t know our relationship behind closed doors.”

Folks thought I was crazy. They assumed they knew better and based their opinions on superficial pleasantries and ignorance. They judged the surface without searching the depths.

I KNEW BETTER!

I’m happy to report- I was right- as I’ve been joyfully married for over 26 years and wouldn’t change a thing!

What's ironic, now, people ask how I got so lucky to marry such an awesome husband. In fact, they wish he would rub off on theirs.

It comes full circle.

I can’t help but think about how this very same situation applies to Christ.

Why him?

Why pick Christ and be in a relationship with him?

Make no mistake; just like marriage, it is a choice to be in a relationship with Christ. It's not only knowledge or recognition- it is a relationship.

I love my husband dearly, but he isn't perfect, and I shouldn't expect him to be- because, I have one man in my life that is- Christ.

What I’ve found is that having a relationship with Christ means having THE BEST best friend that ever existed.

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” ~ John 15:15

Jesus is a friend that—

Always tells the truth;

Will never leave or abandon you;

Advocates for you in every situation;

Networks for you;

Guides you and clears a path for your future;

Can keep a secret;

Is forgiving and keeps no record of wrongs;

Never too busy to listen;

Strong and capable of protecting you from harm;

Doesn’t judge, criticize or condemn your weaknesses;

Celebrates and mourns with you;

Comforts and heals you;

Your biggest fan- consistently wants the best for you;

Thinks you are fantastic and wants to spend as much time as possible with you;

Shares in your interests, desires and dreams; and

Laid down His very life for you!

Now, you must admit this is a good man and a one-of-a-kind friend!

So, why him?

Because Christ is the fulfillment of ALL our needs and a companion that makes life abundant.

I took a chance on my husband- fulfilling his promises and being the man that I needed him to be, and I took a chance on Christ.

Thanking you Father for the glorious gift of Christ. You tell us that anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Christ is our bridegroom, our savior, and our friend. He is the fulfillment of all our needs and gives us hope for eternity. There is no greater relationship than a relationship with Christ.
